Pressure-Treated Deck Lumber
Pressure-treated lumber is the baseline u2014 skip it and you’ll be rebuilding in 5 years.
After all the floor boarding, I attached the fence and stairs to finish the wood deck. A project that took over 3 years from planning to completion was finally done! The total material cost was approx. 220,000 yen; contractor estimates had ranged from 800,000 to 1.2 million yen.

For cutting the semicircle clearance at columns, I use a hole saw u2014but for semicircle cuts I need a sacrificial backing piece. I wonder how professionals handle this. It’s the method I thought up myself, so maybe there’s a better way.

Next, I trim the SPF along the road-side edge. I run a string line to get a straight reference, then cut along it to create an even gap with the fence. I’m working solo so there are no action shots of the cutting. Honestly, a circular saw would be better suited for straight cuts like this than a jigsaw u2014cleaner edges and better accuracy u2014but at that point in time I was too scared of kickback to use one.
