How to Handle Sand-Plaster and Fiber Walls

Method 1: Seal and Wallpaper Over It

Apply a sealer over the sand-plaster, dry, smooth with putty, then apply wallpaper. Relatively simple and affordable u2014 though heavy irregularities may affect the finish.

Method 2: Strip and Rebuild the Substrate

Completely remove the sand-plaster and rebuild with plasterboard or plywood. More labor and cost, but the cleanest result. DIY Dad used this for tatami room renovations. m(_ _)m

Substrate Prep After Stripping

1. Inspect the existing wall base
2. Remove and repair decayed sections
3. Apply 12.5 mm gypsum board
4. Fill joints with putty
5. Skim coat the entire surface
6. Sand smooth u2192 wallpaper or paint

Screw spacing: 300 mm max. Locate studs first. ^ ^

3) When the Existing Wall Is Sand Plaster u2014 Less Deteriorated

If the sand plaster isn’t badly deteriorated u2014 meaning it doesn’t crumble apart just from touching it u2014 the approach is to apply sealer (primer) over it.

Tools needed: paintbrush, roller, extension pole, paint palette. Materials: sealer.

Paintbrush

Used for narrow, detailed areas u2014 corners and edges where rollers can’t reach.

Roller Handle

The handle the roller cover attaches to. Used for painting large areas.

Large Roller Cover

Holds more paint, faster on large surfaces. Won’t fit in tight corners u2014 obviously.

Small Roller Cover

Used where the large cover can’t reach.

Extension Pole

Attaches to brushes or roller handles. With this, you can reach ceiling-level spots without dragging over a stepladder.

Paint Palette

For mixing and loading paint onto the brush or roller.

Paint Container

Same function as the palette u2014 mixing and loading paint.

Paint Container Insert (Liner)

Fits inside the container. Swap the liner to use a different paint color without cleaning the whole container.

Sealer

A primer coat. Improves paint adhesion and stabilizes the substrate surface.
