After a property purchase, the security question weighs on you u2014 using the keys handed over by the previous owner as-is is a real risk. Key replacement on the front door is simply non-negotiable.

Why it matters:

  • Spare keys may be in circulation (previous occupant’s family, friends, etc.)
  • The real estate agent, contractors, and tradespeople may have had copies
  • Master-key-type properties are known to management companies
  • Movers and renovation workers who borrowed the key u2014 you can’t track all of them

The Challenge: Finding the Right 9-Pin Dimple Key

Video Doorbells & Intercoms

A video intercom upgrades security and tenant confidence u2014 easy DIY install.

The original lock was a 9-pin dimple key, so I needed to find a matching replacement cylinder. Nine pins provides solid pick resistance u2014 more than enough for a rental property.

The locksmith referral I got quoted a price that made my eyes water. Since the replacement looked straightforward from the outside, I was confident DIY was the way to go u2014 but finding the right compatible cylinder turned out to be surprisingly hard work.

Five things to verify when selecting a cylinder:

  1. Cylinder length (typically 28u201346mm)
  2. Tail shape and length (the protruding piece on the side)
  3. Mounting screw length
  4. Whether a washer is required, and its size
  5. Manufacturer compatibility (GOAL, MIWA, WEST, etc.)

After a lot of research and help from a locksmith I found online, I eventually tracked down the right part.

Lock Replacement u2014 5 Steps

  1. Remove the screws from the front plate (the vertical metal strip on the door edge)
  2. Pull the plate off (some doors have two u2014 top and bottom)
  3. Push the cylinder inward from outside and slide it out
  4. Insert the new cylinder (watch the orientation)
  5. Reattach the plate and screw it down u2192 test the key operation

In practice, the job was incredibly simple u2014 just remove some screws and swap the part. The hard part was the selection, not the installation.

Dealing with Seized Screws

Old property screws are often seized tight, and forcing them strips the head u2014 leaving you with a screw you can’t remove at all.

  • Spray CRC 5-56 and wait 10 minutes (penetration takes time)
  • Use an impact driver for the percussive torque
  • Push the driver straight in while turning (prevents cam-out)
  • Use a screwdriver bit that fits perfectly (too small = stripped head)
  • Last resort: a screw extractor tool (Nejisaw, etc.)

DIY vs. Professional u2014 Cost Comparison

  • DIY: Cylinder u00a53,000u2013u00a58,000 + (tools you already own) = u00a53,000u2013u00a58,000 total, ~30 minutes
  • Pro: Cylinder u00a53,000u2013u00a58,000 + call-out / labor u00a510,000u2013u00a520,000 = u00a513,000u2013u00a528,000 total, 1u20132 hours

Once you nail the part selection, DIY is the obvious choice u2014 half the cost or less.

Key Safety Checklist

  • Before removing the old cylinder: test operation with a spare key
  • Test the new key before closing the door
  • If the installation fails after the door is shut, you’re locked out u2014 always work with the door open

Summary

  • Lock replacement after buying a used property is non-negotiable (eliminates spare-key risk)
  • 9-pin dimple key provides solid pick resistance
  • Tools needed: dimple cylinder + impact driver + screwdriver + CRC 5-56
  • Finding the right compatible cylinder is the hardest part
  • DIY cost is less than half of what a locksmith charges
  • Always work with the door open to prevent getting locked out

That’s all for today. Next up: switch removal!
