How to Fix Damaged Fusuma (Japanese Sliding Doors
Fusuma (u8956) are the opaque sliding panel doors used to divide Japanese rooms, typically between a living room and a tatami room or between a closet (u62bcu3057u5165u308c) and the room. Unlike shoji, fusuma are fully opaque, covered with decorative paper or fabric, and framed in lacquered wood. Damage to fusuma u2014 torn covering, water staining, hole punched through u2014 looks terrible but is entirely fixable as a DIY project. I regularly repair and resurface fusuma between tenants, and the cost is a fraction of professional replacement.

A standard fusuma consists of a wooden grid frame (u9aa8u7d44u307f), a paper underlayer applied over the grid (u4e0bu5730u7d19), and the visible decorative covering (u8956u7d19) adhered over that. The covering paper is glued at the edges only u2014 the center floats over the grid frame and the air pockets between the grid members. This construction allows the center to flex slightly without tearing when the room humidity changes. The frame has grooves top and bottom that ride in the sliding tracks (u6577u5c45 / u9d28u5c45).
Fusuma coverings range from standard washi paper (u666eu901au306eu548cu7d19) in traditional patterns to fabric-like vinyl coverings (u30d3u30cbu30fcu30ebu88fd) and even woven fabric coverings in high-end properties. Vinyl-covered fusuma are most common in modern rental properties because they’re more durable and moisture-resistant than paper.

Removing and Reinstalling Fusuma Panels
Fusuma panels are removed by lifting them up into the upper track (u9d28u5c45) until they clear the lower track (u6577u5c45), then swinging the bottom out and lowering. The upper track has enough depth to allow this. If a panel won’t lift high enough, check whether a small wooden stop (u5916u308cu6b62u3081) has been installed u2014 a small screw or block at the top of the upper track that prevents removal; simply unscrew or slide it aside.
With the panel removed, lay it flat on the floor or sawhorses. Remove the handle (u5f15u304du624b) by inserting the handle puller tool (or a flathead screwdriver) into the slot beside the handle and prying it free u2014 most handles clip onto a mounting base. Remove the top and bottom rails (u7e01) if you’re doing a full covering replacement; these are typically held with small nails or friction. If you’re doing a patch or partial repair, the rails can stay in place.
Patching Holes and Small Tears

Adhesives & Sealants
Keep a stock of these u2014 you’ll use them on every single repair job.
For holes smaller than about 10 cm, a patch repair is faster than full re-covering. Cut a piece of new fusuma paper about 5 cm larger than the damage on all sides. Apply the patch to the back side of the damage if the hole goes through the underlayer u2014 use white glue or paste to bond the patch to the wooden grid frame members, then apply a matching top surface patch. For vinyl-covered fusuma, iron-on fusuma repair patches (u3075u3059u307eu88dcu4feeu30b7u30fcu30eb) are available at Cainz in several standard patterns and are the fastest solution for small damage.
Full Fusuma Re-Covering
For badly stained or torn fusuma, complete re-covering gives the best result. Start by removing the old covering paper. Traditional paper comes off easily when wet u2014 spray water liberally across the surface, let it soak for five minutes, then peel back from one corner. Vinyl covering peels off dry. Remove all old paper and adhesive from the panel surface and let the frame dry.
Apply fusuma paste or adhesive spray to the frame edges and perimeter members u2014 not to the center area (the center floats free). Unroll the new covering paper, position it over the panel with an equal overhang on all sides, and press it onto the glued areas starting from the top. Smooth outward from the center to avoid bubbles. Fold the paper around the edges to the back and adhere there. Trim any excess with a utility knife. Replace the handle and rails, and reinstall the panel in its track.
New fusuma paper, like shoji paper, can be tightened over the frame by applying light moisture or heat after installation u2014 it contracts slightly as it dries and gives a tight, smooth finish. After the paper is fully dry, lubricate the top and bottom frame edges with a candle stub or specific track wax (u6577u5c45u3059u3079u308a) to ensure smooth sliding.
