I found the entry door on one of my units with the aluminum kick plate folded almost 90 degrees at one corner, like someone had backed a hand truck straight into it. That plate is only 0.8mm thick aluminum, so it dents easily, but it is also cheap and forgiving to fix if you catch it before the corner cracks. I have replaced or straightened kick plates on 11 doors across my 9 properties over the years, and most of them took under 40 minutes once I had the right tools laid out.
A bent kick plate is not just cosmetic. Once the edge lifts away from the door, tenants catch shoes and cart wheels on it, which bends it further and eventually tears the mounting screws right out of the door slab. Fixing it early usually costs me under 1,500 yen in materials; waiting until it rips off entirely means a full replacement plate at 3,000 to 6,000 yen plus filling old screw holes.
Why Kick Plates Bend in the First Place

Cordless Drill & Driver Kit
The single most-used tool across 15 years of rental property repairs.
On rental doors, kick plates take abuse from three main sources: delivery hand trucks, stroller wheels, and tenants who nudge the door open with a foot while carrying groceries. I have also seen damage from movers dragging furniture past a propped-open door. Because the plate is thin aluminum screwed to a hollow-core or solid wood door, a sharp impact folds the metal rather than denting the door itself, which is actually good news for repair difficulty.

Complete Home Repair Tool Set
A complete kit beats buying individual tools every time u2014 cheaper and always ready.
You do not need a full workshop for this one. Here is what I keep in my repair bag specifically for kick plate work.
- A rubber mallet and a wood block for backing the metal while you tap
- A cordless drill with a Phillips bit to remove and reinstall mounting screws
- 120-grit sandpaper to knock down sharp folded edges
- A replacement plate if the aluminum has cracked (standard size is around 300mm wide by 100mm tall)
- Clear silicone caulk for sealing the bottom edge against moisture
Removing the Damaged Plate
Start by backing out every screw along the top edge of the plate; a typical kick plate has 6 to 8 screws. Do not force the plate off if it is still stuck at the bend point. Instead, gently work a flat pry bar behind the loosened section and lift it away from the door face a few millimeters at a time. On about 8 out of 10 jobs I have done, the plate comes off in one piece even when badly bent, which means I can straighten and reuse it instead of buying new material.

Adhesives & Sealants
Keep a stock of these u2014 you’ll use them on every single repair job.
Once the plate is off the door, lay it face-down on a flat workbench with the wood block under the bent section for support. Use the rubber mallet to tap the crease back toward flat, working from the outer edge of the bend inward in short, controlled strokes rather than one hard hit. Aluminum work-hardens as you bend it, so if a crease does not want to flatten after 15 or 20 taps, stop pushing it and check for stress cracks along the fold line. I replace the plate outright whenever I see a crack longer than about 10mm, because a cracked plate will tear the rest of the way within a few months of continued door use.
For plates that straighten out cleanly, I run 120-grit sandpaper over the repaired area to smooth any small ridges left by the mallet. It will never look factory-flat again, but at typical viewing distance from a hallway or genkan entry, nobody notices a plate that is 95 percent flat versus 100 percent flat.
Reinstalling and Weatherproofing the Bottom Edge
Before screwing the plate back on, check the old screw holes in the door. If any have stripped out from the original impact, I shift the plate up or down by 5 to 10mm so the screws bite into fresh wood, then fill the old holes with a bit of wood filler. Reinstall all 6 to 8 screws snug but not overtightened, since aluminum strips out easily if you crank down with a drill on high torque.
The last step I never skip is running a thin bead of clear silicone along the bottom edge where the plate meets the door and the threshold. Water that wicks up behind an unsealed kick plate is what causes the door bottom to swell and rot over a few years, and resealing takes maybe 5 minutes.
What This Saves Compared to Hiring Out
A handyman service in most areas charges a minimum call-out fee before touching a job this small, and kick plate repairs typically run 8,000 to 15,000 yen once you add labor and a new part. Doing it myself costs the price of caulk and sandpaper if the old plate straightens out, or a new plate at 3,000 to 6,000 yen if it does not. Across the 11 kick plates I have handled, only 3 needed full replacement rather than straightening, which tells me most of this damage looks worse than it actually is structurally.
That is the approach I use across all 9 of my properties: fix the small stuff fast, before a bent corner turns into a torn-off plate and a bigger repair bill.
