This is the final chapter of the bathroom/laundry room renovation series. With the switches reinstalled, washing machine in place, and storage shelves up, I can now speak from experience about what was worth doing u2014 and what I’d do differently next time.

The Reality of Installing a Washing Machine

The part that catches most people off guard with washing machine installation is the height of the water spigot. The existing spigot may not align with the new drain pan. DIY Dad solved this by purchasing a nipple extension fitting.

Don’t forget the ground (earth) connection either. If your outlet doesn’t have a grounding terminal, you’ll need a licensed electrician to add one. An ungrounded washing machine is a real leakage risk.

Storage Shelf Installation Tips

In a bathroom/laundry room, moisture protection is the top priority for storage shelves. Solid wood warps easily in humid environments, so melamine-coated board or pre-painted shelf panels are the better choice for wet areas. Always screw into wall studs u2014 screwing into drywall alone will pull out under load.

Reflecting on the Completed Renovation

This series ran a full 25 episodes u2014 essentially a near-complete renovation of the space. The biggest lesson: plumbing DIY is all about planning ahead. Tools and materials: washing machine, screwdriver.

The washing machine is one I was using at my previous apartment u2014 I just reuse it here. Removing it from the old place is straightforward in principle u2014 you just disconnect the plumbing. The real challenge was getting it out of the building. It’s a big, heavy appliance and very hard to maneuver alone.

My previous apartment was a two-story maisonette with the entrance on the first floor u2014 and stairs beginning right after you step in. The staircase was narrow. And curved. Getting the machine out the door had me sweating buckets.

Bringing it into the new house took the same care. After finishing the wallpaper and cushion flooring, the last thing I needed was to scratch or scuff anything. DIY Dad is not great at that kind of delicate work u2014 and sure enough, I ended up making a few touch-ups along the way.

Installation Steps

1. Set the washing machine onto the drain pan
2. Connect the supply hose to the faucet u2014 attach the fitting to the spigot, then click the hose into place
3. Confirm the hose won’t pull free from the spigot
4. Connect the drain hose to the drain trap and secure with a clamp
5. Installation complete!
