DIY Kitchen Repair: Cabinet Hinges, Drawer Slides, and Surface Repair
Kitchen hardware wears out faster than almost anything else in a rental property. The constant open-and-close cycles of cabinet doors and drawers, combined with the heat, steam, and grease of cooking, accelerate wear significantly. The good news is that most kitchen hardware repairs are simple, the parts are inexpensive, and fixing them properly transforms the feel of a kitchen from tired to functional in just a few hours.

Before buying any parts, systematically check every cabinet door and drawer. Cabinet doors: do they hang level? Do they close without gaps? Do they stay closed or spring open? Doors that sag on one side, have uneven gaps, or fail to close often just need hinge adjustment, not hinge replacement. Drawer problems: stiff sliding, falling out when fully extended, or drawers that sit crooked usually indicate worn or misaligned drawer slides rather than structural damage to the drawer box itself.
Japanese kitchen cabinets in rental properties predominantly use European-style cup hinges (u30b9u30e9u30a4u30c9u4e01u756a / u30abu30c3u30d7u30d2u30f3u30b8) in modern units, or traditional butt hinges (u5e73u4e01u756a) in older cabinetry. Cup hinges have three-way adjustment built in u2014 height, depth, and lateral u2014 while butt hinges have no adjustment at all and require shimming or repositioning.

Adjusting and Replacing Cup Hinges
Cup hinge adjustment is done with a Phillips screwdriver u2014 no removal necessary. The mounting plate screws (u30d7u30ecu30fcu30c8u56fau5b9au30cdu30b8) on the cabinet side move the door up, down, and in or out. The adjustment screw on the hinge arm (u30a2u30fcu30e0u8abfu6574u30cdu30b8) moves the door laterally left or right and affects how tightly the door closes. Open the cabinet door, look at the hinge, and turn the adjustment screws a quarter turn at a time, closing the door after each adjustment to check the result. Most sagging or misaligned cabinet doors can be fully corrected in five minutes without any parts.
When a hinge is damaged or broken, replacement is straightforward. Remove the old hinge by unscrewing the mounting plate from the cabinet interior and the cup from the door. Take the old hinge to Cainz and match it by cup diameter (35 mm is standard), overlay type (full, half, or inset), and arm length. Install the new hinge in the existing holes. If the screw holes have stripped, fill with toothpicks and wood glue, let cure, and re-drive the screws.

Adhesives & Sealants
Keep a stock of these u2014 you’ll use them on every single repair job.
Drawer slides in Japanese kitchen cabinets are typically side-mount roller slides (u30b5u30a4u30c9u30ecu30fcu30eb) or, in newer cabinets, undermount soft-close slides (u30a2u30f3u30c0u30fcu30deu30a6u30f3u30c8u30ecu30fcu30eb). Side-mount slides consist of two pieces: a fixed rail screwed to the cabinet interior, and a moving rail attached to the drawer. When a drawer sticks or falls out, the rails are usually worn, bent, or have lost their locking detent.
Measure the existing slides for length (typically 300u2013500 mm in Japanese kitchens) and width. Remove the drawer by pulling it out to the fully extended position and pressing the release levers on both sides simultaneously. Remove the fixed rails from the cabinet (two or three screws each side). Take the old slide to Cainz and match by length and mounting type. Install the new fixed rails with all screws, then attach the new moving rails to the drawer sides at the same position as the old ones (use the existing holes where possible). Slide the drawer back in u2014 properly installed slides click into place cleanly and the drawer moves smoothly the full length of travel.
Surface and Veneer Repairs
Cabinet doors and drawer fronts in rental properties are typically covered with a printed vinyl or melamine laminate finish. Chips and scratches expose the substrate underneath and look terrible. For small chips, a cabinet touch-up marker (u30adu30bau88dcu4feeu30deu30fcu30abu30fc) from Cainz in a matching color fills the chip and prevents further peeling. For larger areas of peeling veneer, contact adhesive (u30b3u30f3u30bfu30afu30c8u30dcu30f3u30c9) reglues lifted sections u2014 apply adhesive to both surfaces, let dry to a non-tacky state, press firmly together, and clamp or weight overnight.
If the laminate surface is too damaged to repair cosmetically, self-adhesive contact paper (u30abu30c3u30c6u30a3u30f3u30b0u30b7u30fcu30c8) can completely resurface a cabinet door or drawer front at very low cost. Clean the surface thoroughly, remove any loose laminate, sand smooth, and apply the contact paper without bubbles using a squeegee. Edge wrap around corners using a heat gun to improve adhesion. This approach won’t fool a close inspection, but for the inside of a closet or the backs of cabinets, it’s a fast and economical fix.
