Modern Kitchen Cabinet Handles

New handles cost u00a53,000u20138,000 and make a kitchen feel 10 years newer instantly.

After completing the bathroom, the kitchen entered its second phase: outlet addition and floor repair. More sockets mean fewer breaker trips and happier tenants. ^ ^

Adding Kitchen Outlets u2014 Overview

Kitchen Faucets

A faucet upgrade is the single highest-impact kitchen DIY per yen spent.

Old properties often lack enough outlets in the kitchen. Running a microwave, rice cooker, and kettle simultaneously can trip the breaker. Three new outlets were needed: for the dishwasher, refrigerator, and IH cooktop.

Methods for Adding Outlets

  • u2460 Branch from an existing circuit (if capacity allows)
  • u2461 Run a new dedicated circuit (for high-draw appliances)
  • u2462 Install a new 20A dedicated kitchen circuit

Outlet work requires a Type 2 Electrical Work License. Without that credential, a licensed contractor is required.

About the Type 2 Electrical Work License

Highly recommended for landlords. Written exam plus practical skills test u2014 once certified, outlet additions, light fixture swaps, and switch replacements are all fair game.

Exams twice a year; DIY Dad self-studied for roughly 30,000 yen, and has since saved enormously on outsourced electrical work. ^ ^

Now to the Step-by-Step u2014 Getting Quotes

Kitchen Backsplash Tile Kits

A tiled backsplash protects the wall and dramatically upgrades the kitchen appearance.

Hi, it’s DIY Dad! ^ ^

Went to Daruma Sohonten ramen yesterday u2014 a serious tonkotsu shop. It wasn’t quite classic Hakata-style; more of a Hakata-meets-Kitakyushu hybrid, but without the sharp heat you might expect. Surprisingly nuanced and very delicious. (u043eu00b4u2200`u043e) Next time I want to try the braised pork.

Continuing with the 1F kitchen renovation. With the ventilation fan installed, the next step is adding 100V and 200V outlets u2014 one for the dishwasher, one for the refrigerator, and one for the IH cooktop. This is the second time DIY Dad is outsourcing work (the first was tatami re-covering).

The process: phone for a quote u2192 contractor site visit u2192 receive written estimate u2192 choose a contractor.

Unlike tatami, electrical parts don’t vary in quality u2014 even DIY Dad can judge the finished result. The question is contractor selection: who will do exactly what I want, at a reasonable price?

I searched online and called two contractors plus one home improvement center. Three quotes total.

Quote Comparison

The home improvement center had the best phone manner and showed up professionally for the site visit. They explained everything clearly without me having to ask. But they work from a standardized menu, and anything outside that menu gets expensive fast. Their quote: u00a559,850.

Contractor A (found online) had good phone manner and a thorough site visit. They were willing to consider my preferred installation method. Quote: u00a542,000.

Contractor B (also found online) had a phone manner that was… let’s say spirited. The person who showed up was a classic tradesman type. He pushed his own preferred installation method rather than mine u2014 very much a “trust the pro” attitude. Quote: u00a535,217.

On price alone, Contractor B wins. But DIY Dad didn’t warm to their approach. The home improvement center is simply too expensive. So I went back to Contractor A and showed them Contractor B’s price.

They came back with a revised quote that undercut Contractor B. Final price: u00a535,000. Contractor A it is! ^ ^
