Pressure-Treated Deck Lumber

Pressure-treated lumber is the baseline u2014 skip it and you’ll be rebuilding in 5 years.

With the interior renovation winding down, it was time to start on the wood deck. Building a wood deck in the garden had been a long-held dream of DIY Dadu2019s u2014 and now the planning begins in earnest.

A wood deck is a wooden floor platform installed outside the house u2014 in the garden, on a terrace, or as a balcony extension. It acts as a transitional space between the living room and the garden, expanding your usable living area.

Common uses:

  • Outdoor living room (table and chairs for relaxing)
  • BBQ space
  • Play area for children
  • Laundry drying area
  • Sunny spot for pets

For a rental property, a wood deck is a rare and desirable feature. DIY Dad decided to install one at his owner-occupied rental property.

Key Decisions When Planning a Wood Deck

  1. Location and dimensions (width x depth)
  2. Deck board material (natural wood or composite)
  3. Frame structure and material (joists, beams, posts)
  4. Roof or no roof (pergola or patio cover)?
  5. Railing or fence?
  6. Budget

DIY Dad sketched out multiple layout options. With so many variables, it helps to pin down your non-negotiable requirements first.

Deck Screws & Fasteners

Use stainless screws only u2014 standard screws rust and stain the deck within one rainy season.

  • Ground condition (concrete slab, bare earth, gravel)
  • Drainage (will water pool under the deck?)
  • Door sill height versus deck surface level
  • Distance from property boundary (at least 50 cm recommended under Japanese civil law)
  • Location of buried water, drain, and gas pipes

The door sill-to-deck height relationship is especially important. Matching the deck to the interior floor level creates a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

Cost vs. Value

  • DIY material cost: approximately u00a5150,000u2013250,000 depending on deck size
  • Tools: mostly covered by existing equipment

A contractor-built deck can cost u00a5500,000u20131,000,000 or more. DIY means paying only for materials.

Hi, this is DIY Dad.

Today was the neighborhood association annual meeting. These things usually wrap up in an hour, but with an aging neighborhood comes a lot of personal grievances and u201cI said, you saidu201d arguments. Two hours and no resolution.

Continuing the wood deck series. I did some research on what a wood deck actually is. Hereu2019s what I found:

A wood deck u2014 as the name implies u2014 is a deck made of wood. The word u201cdecku201d originates from the shipu2019s deck, and in construction it refers to a raised outdoor floor platform attached to a building. In the building trade, u201cdecku201d on its own typically means u201cwood deck.u201d

Because a wood deck is built at the same floor level as the living room, you can step from inside to outside without a step up or down, creating the feel of an additional room. Itu2019s often called a u201csecond living room,u201d and works beautifully as a family gathering space, a kidsu2019 play area, or a laundry drying platform. The organic warmth of natural wood is part of its appeal.

Common deck materials are softwood, hardwood, and composite wood. Softwoods like western red cedar or sugi are affordable but more susceptible to rot, lightweight, and easy to cut. Hardwoods like ipe or ulin are expensive but highly durable and require little day-to-day maintenance u2014 though theyu2019re heavier and harder to work with. Composite wood (wood flour mixed with resin) is very durable and virtually maintenance-free, but expensive and dense.

Maintenance for a wood deck includes:

  • Removing dust and dirt (accumulated dust accelerates drying, cracking, and rot)
  • Treating warping and cracking (weathering causes the boards to expand and contract, leading to surface damage and raised nails that are a trip hazard)
  • Protective coating every 1u20132 years to slow rot (a quality wood preservative like Xyladecor runs about u00a5800 per square meter)

Xyladecor wood preservative u2014 a popular choice for outdoor wood protection in Japan.

The total cost of ownership for a wood deck is significant because of ongoing maintenance u2014 something worth factoring in from the start.
