A wood deck is a wooden platform installed outside the home u2014 in the garden, on a terrace, or as a balcony extension. It bridges the living room and the garden, expanding usable living space.

- BBQ space
- Childrenu2019s play area
- Laundry drying area
- Sunny spot for pets
For a rental property, a wood deck is a rare amenity and a strong differentiator. DIY Dad decided to install one at his owner-occupied rental property.

Use stainless screws only u2014 standard screws rust and stain the deck within one rainy season.
- Ground condition (concrete, bare earth, gravel)
- Drainage flow (will water accumulate under the deck?)
- Door sill height versus deck surface level
- Distance from property boundary (50 cm minimum recommended)
- Location of buried utility pipes
Aligning the deck surface with the door sill is key for a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

Continuing the wood deck series. Before the deck was built, how did we manage laundry?
We strung rope across the parking area and used it as an improvised clothesline. It worked, but it looked terrible.

That rope strung across the parking space looked so bad it gave me extra motivation to finish the deck quickly. I resolved that as soon as the first-floor interior renovation was done, Iu2019d move straight onto the deck.
That decision was made around the time I was finishing the inspection report and cost estimates for the distressed property renovation. Luckily, after signing the purchase contract, there was about a two-month wait before I could take possession u2014 plenty of time to research and plan. While waiting, I consulted online resources and began mapping out the wood deck in detail.
