2026 DIY Dad’s Note: Wainscoting Finish to Toilet Installation

The most demanding phase of the toilet renovation. Once the wainscoting is finished, it’s on to setting the new toilet bowl u2014 and at that point the end is clearly in sight. ^ ^

Installing the Wainscoting Panels

Hi, this is DIY Dad. ^ ^ I heard back from a contractor about a project I’ve been working toward since 2016 u2014 the first step has apparently gone through smoothly. This project is one of my goals for the year. There are still plenty of hurdles ahead, but I’m pushing forward with full determination!

Continuing the toilet renovation. Following the baseboard, it’s time to attach the wainscoting panels. ^ ^ I started with one wall to see how it looks.

The front (doorway) side. Looks pretty good, doesn’t it? The blind nail heads are scattered across the surface u2014 I’ll fold them in once everything is positioned.

Tips for Driving Blind Nails

Blind nails require a bit of technique. Drive them straight and with a light touch. Any angle at all and the head snaps off before the nail is fully seated.

Hinoki cypress panels are full of knots u2014 and knots are hard. A blind nail simply cannot penetrate a knot. I broke several nails learning this. The trick is to read the panel and place each nail between the knots.

Around the outlet. The panel split slightly in the upper-left corner u2014 but if nobody points it out, nobody would ever notice.

Around the water supply pipe. The cutout fits perfectly. ^ ^
