Installing a built-in dishwasher is a major job covering water supply, drainage, power supply, and cabinet opening work. DIY Dad tackled it across multiple sessions.

Kitchen Faucets
A faucet upgrade is the single highest-impact kitchen DIY per yen spent.
Key points: branch the water supply from the stop valve under the sink; route the drain hose high to prevent back-flow; level with adjusters; fit the front panel to match the existing cabinetry; always start with an empty test cycle. m(_ _)m
Hi, it’s DIY Dad! The snow is terrible today u2014 so cold! Now, about the previously stalled permit application: we’ve been working hard to clear it. In the process, something came to light. The counterparty had been blocking the application u2014 deliberately sabotaging it for their own benefit. That’s completely outrageous conduct.
Normally this would warrant legal action and an end to all dealings. But if this transaction falls through, the whole plan collapses. So as frustrating as it is, DIY Dad will have the counterparty bear a share of the cost and move forward. Whether they agree is up to DIY Dad and our partner contact. Let’s push through! Continuing the 1F kitchen renovation!
This kitchen’s dimensions are not suited to a built-in dishwasher. European dishwashers are too large. Even Japanese models u2014 meeting the manufacturer’s recommended installation space under the countertop is apparently impossible.
Here’s what installing under the countertop looks like:

Built-in vs. Countertop Dishwasher Comparison
Built-in type: Requires cabinet removal and installation work. Cleaner look since there’s no draining rack on the counter. Best for owned properties or renovation-permitted rentals. Top-loading (slide-open) style allows loading dishes comfortably at standing height. Deep-type models fit even large pots. Very quiet (~37 dB). Price: unit ~60,000u2013140,000 yen; installed ~90,000u2013180,000 yen.
Countertop type: Placed on the sink or countertop. Easy to set up, suitable for rentals and frequent movers. Requires a branch faucet connector. You can load standing up. Noisier since vibration transfers to the countertop surface (~35u201338 dB). Price: unit ~30,000u201370,000 yen plus branch connector ~5,000u201315,000 yen.
The built-in type is still the better choice! That’s all for today!
