Installing a built-in dishwasher is a major job covering water supply, drainage, power supply, and cabinet opening work. DIY Dad tackled it across multiple sessions.

Kitchen Faucets
A faucet upgrade is the single highest-impact kitchen DIY per yen spent.
Key points: branch the water supply from the stop valve under the sink; route the drain hose high to prevent back-flow; level with adjusters; fit the front panel to match the existing cabinetry; always start with an empty test cycle. m(_ _)m
Hi, it’s DIY Dad! DIY Dad names his ongoing plans. The stalled permit project becomes “Project OS” u2014 sounds cool! There’s also “Project KS” and “Project K3A” on the go, though those may or may not get their own posts.
Project OS: We did it! We’ve found a way to move forward while having the counterparty bear a share of the burden. Not exactly the split DIY Dad hoped for, but they’ll cover one-third. Huge thanks to our partner contact! Next step is the permit application, but today is Sunday so the application office is closed. Hoping the paperwork goes through tomorrow. Continuing the 1F kitchen renovation!
We’ve confirmed the space, but the manufacturer’s recommended installation dimensions can’t be met in this kitchen. However u2014 the manufacturer’s spec is mostly about clearance for routing pipes and cables, plus a safety margin. It doesn’t necessarily have to be exactly as specified. What matters is that the dishwasher itself physically fits!
If that’s the rule, then there’s a model that might work: the Rinnai front-open type.

Front-open type spec drawing.
Front-Open Type u2014 Pros and Cons
- Pros: Large interior capacity; upper and lower racks each slide independently, easy to load; easy access to lower rack items
- Cons: Lower rack sits low, requiring you to bend; strain on the lower back; water droplets fall to the floor when loading rinsed dishes; gel-type detergent not compatible; no storage cabinet possible below the unit
Honestly, the front-open type doesn’t appeal to DIY Dad from a usability standpoint. Built-in dishwashers are already low to the ground u2014 and then you’re loading from the side. You have to crouch down every single time. That’s a bit much.
DIY Dad wants the slide-open type where dishes load from above. But the depth is insufficient. Which means u2014 it’s time for a major kitchen modification! That’s all for today!
