2026 Note from DIY Dad: Choosing Deck Materials

Pressure-Treated Deck Lumber
Pressure-treated lumber is the baseline u2014 skip it and you’ll be rebuilding in 5 years.
The most important decision in wood deck planning is material selection. Natural wood or composite? Which species? This choice determines cost, durability, and maintenance effort.
Natural Wood vs Composite (WPC)
ud83duded2 RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS
Deck Stains & Waterproof Sealers
Stain every 2u20133 years. It’s the single cheapest way to double deck lifespan.
- Natural wood — pros: real wood feel and warmth, lower cost. Cons: regular painting maintenance required, risk of rot and termites
- Composite (WPC) — pros: does not rot, minimal maintenance, consistent quality. Cons: more expensive, gets very hot in summer, artificial appearance
I chose natural hardwood — for the real wood feel and better cost.
Natural Wood Types
Softwood: SPF (white wood) — inexpensive, must be painted, rots easily (not suitable for decking). Western red cedar — light and workable, less durable than hardwood. Domestic hinoki/sugi — suitable outdoors with pressure treatment, affordable.
Hardwood: Ipe — highest durability, 30+ years without paint, expensive. Ulin (ironwood) — excellent water resistance, tough, hard to work. Bangkirai — best value for hardwood, good balance of durability and price.
I chose Bangkirai — best cost-performance among hardwoods.
Structural Member Material Selection

Deck Screws & Fasteners
Use stainless screws only u2014 standard screws rust and stain the deck within one rainy season.
Structural members (floor joist, beam, post) need at least as much durability as the decking. I used aluminum tube for the frame — natural wood warmth for the decking, aluminum durability for the structure.
Roof Material Selection
Adding a roof provides: use in rainy weather, reduced decking wear, cooler summer conditions. Options: polycarbonate panel pergola (easy DIY) or prefab terrace roof (higher cost).

Polycarbonate Corrugated Roofing
Relative price: 1.4 / Lifespan: 10 years. Does not transmit UV rays — note for plant growing. Has a designated top and bottom face. Recommended for garages, terraces, balconies, greenhouses, and clear walls.

Color-Coated Galvanized (Totan) Corrugated Roofing
Relative price: 1.4 / Lifespan: 15–20 years. Wide color range; a classic corrugated roofing option used for decades. The galvanized coating will eventually rust with age. Suitable for sheds, residential roofing, and exterior walls.
