Pressure-Treated Deck Lumber
Pressure-treated lumber is the baseline u2014 skip it and you’ll be rebuilding in 5 years.
One of the more surprisingly tricky decisions when planning a covered wood deck is selecting the roofing material.
- Is it enough to just keep the rain out?
- Is natural light important?
- What about weight and durability?
This article summarizes which roofing material DIY Dad chose, and the reasoning behind that conclusion.

Stain every 2u20133 years. It’s the single cheapest way to double deck lifespan.
The roof on a wood deck is not just “there to keep the rain off.” Its main roles are:
- Blocking rain and direct sunlight
- Slowing the deterioration of floor boards and structural members
- Creating a space where laundry can be hung outside
- Increasing how often the deck actually gets used
The quality of the roof has a major effect on both the lifespan and usability of the entire deck.
Common Roofing Material Options
Materials commonly considered for a wood deck roof include:
- Corrugated sheet (PVC or polycarbonate)
- Galvalume steel sheet
- Folded-plate roofing
- Pre-fabricated terrace roof systems
Each has its trade-offs, but for DIY installation, the conditions need to be clearly defined first.

For this particular deck, the roofing material had to meet these criteria:
- As light as possible
- Easy to cut and install
- Allows natural light through
- Weather-resistant for outdoor use
- Realistic cost
The highest priority was: “Do not add unnecessary load to the structure.”
Why Heavy Roofing Materials Were Ruled Out
Galvalume steel and folded-plate roofing are durable and look great. However, DIY Dad chose not to use them for this project. The reason is straightforward:
- They make the roof significantly heavier
- Structural calculations become more complex
- Safety risks during installation increase
In DIY work, “staying within what you can realistically handle” is critically important.
The Chosen Material: Polycarbonate Corrugated Sheet
The material DIY Dad ultimately selected was polycarbonate corrugated sheet. The reasons for choosing it:
- Extremely lightweight
- Sufficient strength and weather resistance
- High light transmittance
- Available at any home improvement store
- Easy to cut and work with
A major added benefit was that having a roof does not make the interior feel dark.

Of course, there are drawbacks:
- Not a high-end look
- Some degradation over time with age
- Rain noise can be noticeable
For this deck, however, the following mindset was adopted:
- Treat it as a consumable component
- Design it so replacement is straightforward
- Prioritize protecting the structural members underneath
In hindsight, it was a rational choice.
Conclusion: Prioritize Lightness and Workability
DIY Dad’s conclusion is clear:
For a covered wood deck, choose a roofing material that is light and easy to work with.
The reasons:
- Reduces load on the structure
- Safer to install
- Manageable over the long term with DIY skills
The priority was long-term safe use over visual impact.

DIY Dad’s Stance
A covered wood deck is not about how it looks the day it’s finished u2014 it’s about whether it’s still problem-free several years later. That’s why structure, weight, and maintainability were prioritized over visual flair.
